Mr. & Mrs. Smith

This flick reminded me about films like True Lies but in the end it fell far below par as compared to that entertaining movie. Two people, fell in love, got married, felt their marriage was going down the drains and all the while both are undercover secret agents working for competing agencies, the funny part is that neither knows anything about the other’s espionage background. Thus is the gist of the story of Mr John Smith (Brad Pitt) and his wife Mrs Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie).

The pace is humdrum at first as the couple details their failing marriage, turning from what at first seems like a romance made in heaven which soon gets bog down in the quagmire of a relationship. Both seem to be in the world of their own and doesn’t connect, which is understandable as they have so much secrets kept from each other and if they’re not arguing about the home décor, they’re out killing people off.

Soon they find themselves going after a single target which revealed the years (5 or 6 years?) of deceit each of them perpetrated and sets the showdown for both. Things heat up as they both try to off the other. The movie tries to interject jokes during the midst of the movie but they either come out too corny or cliché for good taste, exaggerating the marital disputes each has against the other. The action was much better but compacted towards the end as they set against each other, the car chases were great with tons of wreckages, explosions and carnage. The only good part was near the end. As both of them team up to salvage their existence, be prepared for a good John Woo style two against the whole might of the agencies combined scenario with gun a blazing. I said it was good, I didn’t say it was believable since with those odds its amazing that they came out without much damage much less have their brain splattered on the ground. I liked the way they choreographed it like they were dancing.

The other good part was when they were after each other’s throat and lots of naughty scenes there, it’s a wonder the censors didn’t have a field day here. Over all it’s just a mediocre type of flick, good for a few cheap laughs, some good old senseless action and steamy scenes. It’s works better in portraying much of the problems married couples have (Laura was belting my thigh when we saw the scene where they were in bed and the Mr wanted to sleep while Mrs wanted to read) than it worked as a romance/action flick. I figure the tabloids are having more of a field day speculating the ralationship between Brad and Angelina breaking up the marriage than the reviewrs have on reviewing the movie, though if the chemistry both had on screen were translated into real life, mmmmmmm...... Not much to recommend, my rating 3/5.
