A Famosa

A Famosa was called by the Portugese as "The Famous", a fort build after their invasion of Melaka (Malacca) in 1511 and the overthrow of the Melaka Sulatanate. Consisting of an entire length of fortification surrounding the main town area around Bukit Istana, with several additions once the town grew. The Dutch later took control from the Portugese and settled there with several alterations to the original fort and fortifications, most notabily is the addition of the inscription ANNO 1670 on the A Famosa gate. When the British came, Farquahar decided to demolish the fort but was stopped at the last moment by Stanford Raffles leaving only the Gate intact which is all that remains at present for tourists to view and symbolizing the various imperialist history associated to Melaka.
