Bloggers United
Recently the Malaysian Blogosphere had some bad press from narrow minded quarters within our government. From coments that Bloggers are all anonymous rumour and lie mongerers to insinuation that women bloggers have too much free time than they know what to do with, to blog readers are those that cannot differentiate different opinion and believe that all blogs disseminate mistruths and recently the flak to try and rein in all local bloggers by requiring them to register, which incidently target those with domains registed within the country thus implying a malicious intent. It's a bit absurd as many of us utilise services such as Blogger, MySpace, wordpress and other services outside the country.
Even as I am not a Social and Political blogger, it still bugs me to hell that our government is trying to implement what is incidently a censoring of opinion of cyberspace, a tenet that they said they would hold sacroscant. Thus the worrying trend of what direction our government is trying to go with concerning our cyberspace. Anyway it is a great step that I read that the local Bloggers are not sitting quietly and let people like these dictate to us what we can and cannot do. We understand we have a responsibility and do practice a certain standard in what we write. I support the stand that many of the Malaysian bloggers are taking and in the setting up of the National Alliance of Bloggers (NAB) and for the Blogger United Malaysia (BUM) as a platform to safeguard and discuss on our rights and state in the Malaysian context.
Thus I will be heading to the gathering to be held in conjunction for World Press Freedom Day held by BUM as stated in the poster above. I think they need our support more than ever and I applaud them for taking these steps. It would be interesting to hear what veteran bloggers have to say. Details are as stated below:
